There's been a lot of talk lately about the public school system in this country. I for one, am very interested in seeing the movie "Waiting for Superman." As usual, I have my opinion about public school, but I'd like to hear yours. So tell us what you think about tenure, incentive based raises and job security.
Let me touch briefly on children's writing skills. I'm not an expert in this area, but what I can see students today are struggling in this area. Why do you think that is? Is it because pen and paper are going by the way of the dinosaur? Personally, I love the yellow legal pad and a black pen. I've done some of my best creative work with those instruments.
I'd like to change the fact students lack strong writing skills. I've started speaking to elementary and middle school children about writing. I hope I've motivated at least one child. What other ideas could we implement to get kids cheering for writing?

ReplyDeleteCan I relate to this one! Our district has a new superintendent who has already made improvement of writing skills paramount. I'm sure our students will be grateful one day but at present I just hope they're not turned off by seemingly having to write all the time.
I'm thinking, given technology and the fact that most of our communication on the net is via the written word, this is an important skill to hone--I would hope Americans WANT to look good when communicating with the world and that written word becomes the face we present to the world. As per pen and paper, give me a keyboard any day. I can jot the ideas down much faster and am much more willing to manipulate the text rather than rewrite it. (I've got my kids doing the same. Editing isn't such a chore that way, know what I mean? I do, however, keep a small notebook and/or journal handy to get down ideas when that laptop isn't available.)
Tenure/incentive pay. Eliminate the first and you've created the second.'Nough said.

I don't like the whole tenure thing but I also can understand that teachers want job security. So how about tenure "term limits?" Every 3-5 years a teacher is re-evaluated to see if they deserve to keep their tenure status. It's a thought.
